General Instructions for navigating the site:

Find by Occupation
When searching under the tab ‘Find by Occupation,’ first select an area from the drop-down menu. Type the name of the occupation in the key word box and click ‘Search.’

Or, if you know the SOC (Standard Occupational Code) for occupations, type number in the second box and click ‘Search.’

Or, to view a listing of the SOC codes available, click on the ‘+’ sign to expand the list (click ‘-’ sign to collapse list) next to ‘Browse SOC Code’ for occupations. Click again on the ‘+’ sign of the occupation(s) you wish to view. There are two levels of occupations to expand. Click in the empty box next to the occupation to place a check mark (limit your search to 20 occupations for best performance). When all your selections have been made, click ‘Search.’

Selections are sorted according to career grade (based on job openings, percent growth, and average annual wages over 10 year period). Information available is SOC code, occupational title, grade, entry wage, mean wage, experienced wage, annual openings and percent change of the annual openings. You may sort any of these columns at the top by clicking on the column link.

After selecting an occupation and area and clicking ‘Search,’ on the following page, you may change the educational and training attainment for that occupation in the box to the left. To make multiple selections, hold ‘Ctrl’ key while clicking on desired education and training levels. You can also change the area from the drop-down menu to view that particular occupation for a different area in the box to the right.

By clicking on the ‘View’ button next to SOC code, you can view other data, such as CIP (Classification of Instructional Programs) Code, program title (names, location and contact information of training providers for program). Other information contained on this page include O*NET knowledge, knowledge scores, skills, skills scores, abilities and ability scores. Additionally, occupation base employment, projected employment, related SOC code, occupational titles and industry information is available at the bottom of this page.

Information about the Top 5 Industries that employ the occupation that you selected is available, including NAICS code, industry title, industry description, grade, base employment, projected employment by industry. By clicking on ‘View,’ you can see the companies in the region selected that employ workers in that industry.

Find by Industry
When searching under the tab ‘Find by industry,’ first select an area from the drop-down menu. Type the name of the industry in the key word box and click ‘Search.’

Or, if you know the NAICS (North American Industry Coding System) code for industries, type number in the second box and click ‘Search.’

Or, to view a listing of the NAICS codes available, click on the ‘+’ sign to expand the list (click ‘-’ sign to collapse list) next to ‘Browse NAICS Code’. Click again on the ‘+’ sign of the industry or industries you wish to view. There are two levels of industries to expand. Click in the empty box next to the industry to place a check mark (limit your search to 20 industries for best performance). When all your selections have been made, click ‘Search.’

It is important to note that the occupational data, such as openings, wages and percent change, is data across all industries, not just the selected industry. The list of occupations within the industry, however, is specific to the industry selected.

When searching under the tab, ‘Find by Geography,’ either select an area from the drop-down menu and click ‘Search’ or choose an area by clicking on a region of the map.

Reminders:
  • Type can be uppercase or lowercase.
  • Use ‘+’ sign to expand list of selections. Use ‘-’ sign to collapse list of selections.
  • Click on any column heading to sort data. When clicking on occupational title column heading first time will sort descending from A-Z, click on title column second time and sorts ascending from Z-A. When clicking on data column heading (wages, openings, percent change) first time will sort ascending from lowest to highest, click on data column heading second time and sorts descending from highest to lowest.
  • Colored links are hyper-linked to another page. Click on hyper-link to access page.
  • On drop-down menu, hold ‘Ctrl’ key and click to make multiple selections.
  • Click on the page number link to go to another page.
